Why Volunteer?

Every event we organise, every resource we produce, and every family we support is made possible by volunteers. Without them, quite simply, the charity wouldn't exist. Volunteering with us means you'll be directly helping families of deaf children in Croydon — and you'll join a friendly, supportive team in the process.

We hear from our volunteers that they value the sense of community, the chance to develop new skills, and the knowledge that their time is going somewhere meaningful. Several of our current volunteers are parents of deaf children themselves. Others have professional backgrounds in audiology, education, or social work. Some have no prior connection to deafness at all — they simply wanted to help a local cause.

Roles We're Looking For

Event Volunteers

Our community events need people to help with set-up, running activities, greeting families, and tidying up afterwards. Most events take place on weekends and last a few hours. You don't need any special qualifications — enthusiasm and a willingness to get stuck in are what matter.

Parent Mentors

If you're a parent of a deaf child with a few years of experience behind you, you could be a mentor for families who are newly diagnosed. Mentoring involves occasional phone calls, emails, or meet-ups with a matched family. Training is provided, and you'd be supported by our committee throughout.

Committee Members

Our committee meets quarterly (with occasional extra meetings around big events) to plan the charity's activities, manage finances, and set direction. We're especially keen to hear from people with skills in fundraising, communications, or charity governance. Committee members are also charity trustees.

Admin and Communications

Keeping the charity running involves a fair amount of behind-the-scenes work — updating the mailing list, writing newsletter content, managing social media, and handling enquiries. If you're organised and comfortable with email and basic digital tools, you could make a real contribution from home.

Specialist Volunteers

From time to time we need people with specific skills: a BSL interpreter for an event, a photographer to capture a family fun day, or someone with a background in web design. If you have a skill you'd like to offer, we'll find a way to use it.

What We Ask of Volunteers

  • DBS check — all volunteers who work directly with children need an enhanced DBS check. We'll arrange and pay for this.
  • Reliability — we understand that life gets in the way sometimes, but if you commit to helping at an event or mentoring a family, we need to be able to count on you.
  • Respect and sensitivity — you'll be working with families in a range of circumstances. A non-judgemental attitude and respect for confidentiality are essential.
  • Willingness to learn — you don't need to know everything about deafness before you start. We'll give you the information and support you need.

How to Get Started

Interested? Drop us an email at [email protected] with a bit about yourself and how you'd like to help. We'll get back to you, have an informal chat, and take things from there. There's no formal application form — we keep things straightforward.
